Rancho Bernardo, CA: A Master-Planned Community in San Diego’s Northern Hills

Rancho Bernardo sits in the northern hills of San Diego County. It rests about 20 miles north-northeast of downtown San Diego. Development began in 1961, and the Rancho Bernardo Inn opened at its center in 1963. San Diego annexed the area during the 1960s.

Today the community is home to roughly 40,119 residents. Many are well-educated professionals and retirees. The streets feel planned and orderly, with golf courses, private clubs, and sweeping canyon views throughout.

Local landmarks give the area its character. Bernardo Winery, established in 1889, is one of the oldest operating wineries in Southern California. Nearby Lake Hodges draws walkers and hikers to its trails. Rancho Bernardo Community Park spreads across 38 acres of fields and courts.

The community includes several distinct neighborhoods. Residents know Westwood, Bernardo Heights, and Oaks North well. Others live in Seven Oaks, The Trails, The Greens, and Rolling Hills. Each offers its own clubs and quiet residential streets.

Business also thrives here. The Carmel Mountain Ranch and Rancho Bernardo area holds more than 6 million square feet of office space.
